FIRST INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON HISTORICAL SHIPBUILDING
The Northern Maritime Museum shall arrange an international forum for historical wooden shipbuilding «Matitsa 2020»* in July 2020 in Arkhangelsk. The main goal of the forum is to ensure competence exchange within revival and preservation of traditions of historical wooden shipbuilding in the North.
Wooden shipbuilding schools and shipyards have been preserved and are being opened now in the Arkhangelsk region and the neighboring regions and countries: in Karelia, Finland, many towns of Northern Norway, in Sweden. Located in the delta of the Northern Dvina river which flows into the White Sea, Arkhangelsk is connected to these regions through water routes, and the city may become a coordination center for numerous projects devoted to historical shipbuilding.
Revival of wooden shipbuilding is not possible without comprehension of traditional technologies. Understanding and use of such technologies makes it possible to create a professional pool of future designers, constructors, as well as renovators, museum workers, re-enactors.
The forum's agenda shall include:
1. «Round table» for shipbuilders for competence and experience exchange;
2. Presentation of cases within preservation, renovation and study of the existing traditional wooden vessels;
3. Presentation of cases within educational programs related to wooden shipbuilding;
4. «Round table» for practical experience exchange within Arctic sailing onboard of historical vessels;
5. Joint meeting for ship drivers and authorities regulating private non-commercial navigation, to improve interaction;
6. Presentations for the local population and the guests of the city;
7. Demonstration of the historic vessels in the harbor;
8. Excursions to the museums and shipyards.
One of the issues for discussion at the forum will be an opportunity to establish a long-term sustainable cross-border interregional mechanism of communication and interaction between shipyards, maritime museums, and shipbuilding schools.

Activities in the Kenozero National Park, village Morshchikhinskaya. Folk shipbuilding fest «Lekshmozerskaya Regatta». Workshops, meeting the natural and cultural heritage of the Park, business and cultural programs.

* Matitsa is a main beam used to support the ceiling (normally in wooden buildings), a keel of a Pomor boat. The word originates from a concept of «mother» - the basis and the main source of life.
